August is National Make-A-Will Month

While you have already and wisely taken the time to have your Estate Plan crafted, assembled and signed into life, I am confident you have family members and friends that have not yet carved out time from their busy calendars to make the same wise choice regarding their need for a Will (or Trust).

Many people, especially younger adults, may mistakenly believe that Wills are only for the elderly or wealthy. However, creating a Will is a proactive and caring decision, regardless of age or income level.

You Get to Decide What Happens to Your Stuff

Even if you don’t own a house or have major investments, a Will ensures that whatever you do have — like your car, bank accounts, digital assets, or pets — goes to the right people — the people you choose rather than the people state law chooses! A Will clears up any doubt.

You Can Name a Guardian for Your Children

If you’re a parent, having a Will is especially critical. A Will is how you legally name who you want to take care of your kids if something unexpected happens. Picture the peace of mind knowing your children will be cared for by someone you trust, according to your wishes.

You Can Make Medical and Legal Choices Clear

Excellent Estate Plans also include a Living Will and Healthcare directives, which let you outline what you want if you cannot speak for yourself. For example, decisions about life support or emergency medical treatment can be pre-determined, offering you and your loved ones peace of mind — a luxury that isn’t age-dependent.

You Make Things Easier for Loved Ones

Having a Will (or Trust) in place prevents confusion, legal delays, and stress for the people you care about most. In the absence of a Will, disputes can arise among family members over asset distribution, potentially leading to costly and lengthy legal battles. By having a Will, you spare your loved ones from added grief during an already difficult time.

Making a Will is a responsible and compassionate step that helps protect loved ones and gives you control over your wishes. Use this National Make-A-Will Month as motivation to either create a Will (or Trust) or encourage younger family members and friends to do so. Remember, peace of mind is not something reserved for later in life.
